Do you know how hard it is to keep a secret from the Internet? Especially when that information is exciting and kind of a big deal – to me anyway. I’m typically pretty quick to share good news. There’s something about sharing it with friends, family, and you, dear readers, that makes good news even sweeter.
Except this time, it isn’t just my news. It’s his too, so when we found out that the apartment that Boyfriend and I have been on the waiting list for since August had a unit available in December, I chose to hold onto that as our thing for a little while first. Instead of taking to the Twitters or this space here or Facebook, I sort of just basked in our news, our plans, our next steps before sharing it publicly. We shared it with friends and family, of course, but kept it a little close for a short while.
It’s also a little bit bigger than that – than just deciding to shack up together. The apartment building we’ve been on the waiting list for is in Portland, Oregon, which means I’ll be leaving Colorado before the end of 2010.
Go [Further] West Young Woman
I knew when I decided to move to Colorado almost exactly a year ago, that I’d stay in Colorado as long as was right and that my next move would likely be to the Pacific Northwest. In April, my friend Melissa and I visited Sean and others out there, knowing that there was something about this city that was going to leave a mark on me. In April, Boyfriend and I went from friends-who-ran-into-each-other-at-happy-hours, to can’t-get-enough-of-each-other silly, smitten, loverfaces. Chris often talked about how much he loved Portland, and throughout the summer we kept having “Wouldn’t it be fun to live in Portland someday?” conversations that evolved into a “Let’s go to Portland to sort of… get a feel for it” trip in August, at which point we found our perfect apartment and put our names on the waiting list, hoping for something towards the end of the year.
Remember when I wrote about how I believe he and I have been on a collision course leading us to meeting exactly when we did? When I wrote that, I left out the part about how we were already talking about moving around and exploring together – and knew we were headed to Portland sometime. I’d found a partner that not only wanted what I was pursuing because he was supporting my dreams, but he was also already building a life that ran his dreams right into mine at exactly the right time. Collision course. You could say I picked him up on my way out to the west coast
Home Sweet Apartment
Anyway, last Tuesday, we got the call from the apartment manager that a unit – an apartment, a home – had opened up in building we wanted in the neighborhood we wanted – in the middle of December. We knew when we got that call, we’d be jumping on it – so as of Tuesday of last week, months of daydreaming and loose planning finally manifested and it’s now official:
Chris and I are moving to Portland in 5 weeks.
It’d be way too obvious of a statement to discuss how excited I am for the next chapter, a new adventure, and exploring a city that I’ve visited twice and loved immensely both times. It’d be just as obvious a statement to discus the bittersweet feelings I have about leaving the home, the fit, and the family I’ve found in Colorado. I also haven’t even really addressed the {!!!} surrounding the feelings I have about moving in with my best friend and love. I’m totally confident that these feelings of excitement and transition will show up here as they’re processed and as it happens.
For now, I’m going to bask. And after a week of sharing that with Boyfriend, my friends, and my family – I’m thrilled to share that news and this adventure with you, dear readers.
So… do I know any bloggers in Portland?

AHHHH!!! I just *knew* you were going to say you were moving somewhere new and fabulous with him! I am almost wrote it to you on Twitter yesterday but decided to play along and keep my mouth shut so you could share your news! YAY YAY YAY!! So excited and happy and ecstatic for you lady!! Congrats on the apt opening up and congrats on making big exciting decisions!! Your ability to make a decision and just leap is incredibly inspiring and makes me think a lot about what my upcoming life living decisions will be!!
Thanks for sharing
Well, I lived in Portland from August 2009-July 2010. I found it to be a bit of a culture clash, even as a liberal coffee-lover. It's a smart city with a very unique culture. I loved being so close to the ocean and the mountains. The street people get tiresome and the whole "keep Portland weird" thing is a bit arbitrary. I had never visited West of Denver before moving to Portland, but I'm glad we tried it on.
I lived in NW, sort of by 21st and 23rd. I'd be happy to give you more info on the city. I will say this – it's paradise for a blogger. Join Beer & Blogs – a weekly meeting that celebrate both things.
And the FOOD! I love what a foodie town it's becoming, love the wine-country part of it, the proximity to the ocean. So excited to explore all of that. Thanks for your perspective and the tip on Beer & Blogs! You can bet I'm going to check that out. Also, that NW 23rd area is a favorite. I believe my yoga studio's up that way.
WEEEEEEEE! That is all. Can't wait to hear all about how fab your life in Portland is.
Thank you! Your moving tips/advice have been really helpful too
How exciting! Congratulations, lady. Can't wait to hear all about your new adventures.
Thanks, lovely!
Yea, yea, yea!! You know bloggers in Seattle, which is only 3 hours away.
I'm totally already planning on a work trip down to Portland in the next few months, so I'll keep you posted. HOORAY FOR THE PACIFIC NW!
And I've never been to Seattle! I'm really excited to get up there and check that city out – more than once. When you come down to PDX, you must let me know
YAY!!!!!!
So excited for you.
My friend Ula lives in Portland. She's been there for awhile and would be a great contact to have out there. She's not a huge blogger, but when she does, she blogs at: http://unicornrainbows.blogspot.com. Her Facebook (which is probably private): http://www.facebook.com/#!/ulajanik. I will let her know you may contact her.
Thanks for the friend tip
I actually know very few people in Portland, and am already stalking bloggers, ha. I'll look Ula up. Thanks!
Love that city (especially your soon-to-be new neighborhood!) and can't wait to hear about all the new NW adventures! Good stuff!
Thanks! I'm excited about that location for sure – holler if you ever come visit!
Could not be happier for you two! Hoping to that my travels will bring me to Portland in the next year and we can meet up for cocktails and catch up on how fabulous life has been for you while getting settled in the Pacific NW.
Love love love. Great seeing you on Saturday
I'd LOVE to see you out there sometime in the next year! Great seeing you on Saturday also
I love you and I adore Chris and Portland is one of my fave cities ever. I'm so thrilled for you and this next chapter, my love! Expect a visitor!
I DEFINITELY expect you to come see us!
That's super exciting– Congrats! Portland is awesome.
Thanks, I happen to agree with that
Congrats on both the new place and moving in with the boyfriend! I have never been to Portland, so I can't imagine why you would want to leave Colorado.
Colorado is an amazing place, and I have no doubts that I'll be back
That is so exciting! Congrats, and best of luck with the big move.
Thank you!
Awesome news, Doni! Congratulations on making a big move again, I have no doubts that you will love Portland.
Thanks, Mandy
Congrats Doni! Not only a new city but a new adventure w/the Boyfriend (and I'm not just talking "What IS this thing that's been on our bedroom floor for 2 weeks" adventure!) I have a soft spot for Portland 2.0 (my Portland is, of course, the OG of port-cities!)
Ha, yes! PDX was named after your Portland 1.0, this is true. Perhaps we'll have to figure out a visit to each other's Portlands sometime in 2011?
I'm hoping to be out to PDX at the beginning of June 2011. You will DEFINITELY be on my "Must Coffee Date With" list.
Congratulations Doniree! Portland is amazing! I love it here! The vibe, the people, the food carts! All of it is great!
Can't wait to hear how you settle into the city of roses!
M.
THE FOOD CARTS. I love the foodie aspect of that city – it's one of my favorite things about it. I'd love to meet some of the PDX bloggers once I get there and settled – let's keep in touch, shall we?
You got it lady!
I literally cannot sit still right now, but am trying diligently because hi, I am at work, and if I start jumping up and down people might officially think I've lost it, but: ME. I LIVE IN PORTLAND.
And there happen to be a slew of crazy amazing bloggers in town, some of whom have become some of my closest friends since I got here in 2007.
You are going to LOVE IT here. And I'm seriously SO excited to meet you.
Sounds exciting! What a big change, which means 2011 is going to be ALL NEW! I LOVE when that happens. Fresh starts are fun! Scary sometimes, but mostly fun, I'd say. Congrats to you – this is a big deal on a lot of levels
Thank you! I'm stoked
I moved to Colorado at the start of 2010 and it was a great way to mark a new year, for sure.
Oh man…..I mean. obviously I'm happy for you….and obviously, I'm really. really. really. sad for me.
I'll miss you, this post makes me want to cry a bit.
There aren't words for how much I'm going to miss you, sister friend.
FUN!!! Miss Melissa and I were JUST talking about you what was coming next in your adventures on Friday. Congrats lady
Aww, come visit Jess!
As a former Portlander (born and raised), of course I'm super excited for your new move and I love it too! I can't wait to live vicariously through you since I hardly make it back (although since I'm getting married there next year, I'm likely to be back at least 3 times next year). I also LOVE NW 23rd and if you're looking for a great creperie, please try Vivace Coffee House and Creperie. So so good. And there is a great spiritual bookstore called New Renaissance that I know you'll love that's just a couple blocks up from there: http://www.newrenbooks.com.
THANK YOU for those recommendations! I love that NW 23rd area, so that coffee house and crepe place recommendation – much appreciated!
Noooo, we're supposed to become best yoga friends first! I'm only sort of joking. You will be missed here in Boulder but of course I wish you the happiest of trails.
We still time! Let's hang soon, for realz
YAY! So exciting, Doni! And moving in with the boyfriend too?! Good things all around
Congratulations, my darling.
Yes! I'm pretty stoked about that part, actually
Congrats, lady friend!! Can't wait to come visit!
West Coast takeover.
I am so excited for you!! xx
Congratulations, Doni & Boyfriend! I spent 3 amazing years in Portland while going to college and grad school. It's city that is still very near and dear to my heart. You already love it and will continue to do so. Portland is known for it's coffee, artisan micro-brews, and the fact that it breeds writers. It's a hotbed of the literary world and you're going to fit right it. Good luck on your move! Would love to meet up sometime when I'm down there (I live in Seattle). Great choice!
Ah yes, their coffees and micro-brews are some of my favorites
And speaking of literary fun – POWELL'S is one of my favorite places to explore, sip, wander, and wonder
How exciting! Congrats! Cohabitation is wonderful
I'm not in Portland, but I'm just a couple hours north in Seattle. Come up and visit! I have several friends in Portland, too, so I get down there as often as I can. It's such a wonderful city!
Let's plan a big, giant party and drink lots of wine. Somewhere in Portland or Seattle. Or hell, even in the middle of the twho
So many tidbits of super exciting news all merged into one huge ball of massive awesomeness. How wonderful!! I hope everything between here and now and there and then goes smoothly for you both.
Go Doni Go! My mom & sister recently moved to Oregon (Beaverton, near Portland). They're trying to get me & Jonathan to move down there. :]
Well, you should at the very least come visit!
Congratulations! This is super exciting for you, and I have heard wonderful things about Portland. I admire so much how you realize the best timing for you in your life. Incredible.
As for bloggers in Portland, there's Lauren at the little things we do. She seems so cool and fun. You should check out her blog and link up with her!
Thanks for the blog recommendation! Lauren can consider herself stalked. In a good, non-creepy way.
Holy cow lady! That is so exciting!!!!! Never got to visit you in CO but I've also never been to Portland… guess I'll be making my way soon enough!
Best of luck with the move!
So happy and excited for you guys. But you know this already
Love you. xoxo
Thanks, girl
Love you back.
Such awesome things coming your way!!! I can't wait to hear all about it. Oh, and TIP DU JOUR start packing early.
Ha, I've already started looking at every single thing I own with a discerning "how much do I REALLY need this?" eye.
I'm ridiculously happy for you! I haven't been to Portland, but I've heard all sorts of amazing things about that city. I can't wait to visit.
Yes! Come visit!
Where is the "like" button for your blog? You should add one. Except I more than LIKE this. I LOVE IT! Yippee!!! If I could, I would have a glass of champagne and imagine I was sitting next to you celebrating!
I added a Like button just for you!
aw yay doni, i was wondering when this post would come! that is just so exciting and i'm so happy for you both, woo portland!
A little overdue, yes but I'm so happy to finally be public about it
thanks for your support, love!
Oh congrats! I can't wait to explore another city with you!
Thank you, my other-coastal friend!
awwwww that's so exciting!!!
Congrats to both of you
Portland is a FABULOUS city from what i hear – one of my besties is living it up in the Pearl District for the next three years
Can't wait to read about your adventures out there!
The Pearl District is a great part of downtown and not too far from where we'll be
How exciting for y'all, Doni! I cannot wait to hear more about it and all the adventures y'all have in the Northwest! AND maybe this is the perfect time, too, because W and I have never been out there… could be fun!
COME SEE US, you newlyweds you!
Yay, I'm so happy for you and your upcoming adventure! I love Portland; it's so beautiful there, especially for a big city. Congrats on the next chapter in life that awaits you.
Thanks, darling!
Seriously could NOT be happier for you both! You deserve this so, so much.
I'm so, so stoked
Thanks for the encouragement!
How exciting! I've only been once because a mega sale at the Hotel Monaco coincided with a Southwest sale, but I loved being there, and Eric went gaga over all the different food cart options. I hope being there brings you as much joy as your first move did!
That sounds like the perfect storm for a Portland trip!
Aaww that is very exciting news to hear. I’ve lived on the west coast my entire life and never been to Portland, which is actually very sad since I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it
Good luck with your new adventure.
Well, you're welcome to come up anytime!
such exciting news Doni!!!!! moving to a new place is perhaps one of the most enriching things ever, and it's so great that it all worked out just before the new year. everything happens for a reason
good luck doll!!
and a portland-based blog you must add to your MUST-CHECK-OUT-LIST is the lovely, sassy, awesome Caitlin, over at http://candyflosspersie.blogspot.com
she rocks, and i think you'll love her too.
Thanks for the blogger tip! I'll have to check Caitlin out
Congrats!!! I can't wait to hear about your new adventures!!!
Thanks, Taylor – I'm stoked!
So exciting! I've never been to Portland, though I hear that Asheville, NC is like the Portland of the east, and I LOVE Asheville. Such an exciting journey for you two!
HA! That's funny you say that. Chris actually fell in love with Portland after seeing a movie that was filmed there, that he originally thought was filmed in Asheville. Turns out, it was Portland instead
I've heard nothing but amazing things about Asheville and will HAVE to check that out sometime.
From one great American city to the next–how exciting! You totally need to meet up with Kerri Anne, Kaleigha (krameymartin) and Rhi Rhi. Some of my absolute favorite bloggers on the Internet, and all in Portland, too!
I've already been stalking Kerri Anne, but thanks for the other names! I can't wait to connect
I love the serendipity that is your life, and watching it unfold makes me happy to know you. Congrats. Good luck and take LOTS of pictures. I can't wait to hear all about the food.
Thank you, Kate. Of course I'll take many, many photos – and OMG the food
I let out a little shriek when I read this because I felt special knowing I knew a little early
Congrats again dollface. You're going to have such a fabulous time living in Portland!
You are special
I'm pretty excited, and we'll have to figure out some sort of west coast get together perhaps in the spring!
awesomeness! you're the 3rd person this month I know of relocating. Sydney (of course), my friend Lauren is moving from Texas to Kansas City and now you. I'm happy that you found someone who is as much of a wanderer as you.
A very important question: is there a Trader Joe's in Portland? *I was on Jenn's mailing list too
There IS a Trader Joe's in Portland! AND AN IKEA.
Amazing news, huge congratulations!! So excited for this new chapter for you!
Thank you! I'm pretty excited myself
Good luck and congrats! I'm so jealous, I'm getting the itch to move and it's just not the right time for me yet!
Oooh! What places do you have in mind??
I haven't thought about it really because it can't be. Anywhere. Anywhere that's not here (not that Charlotte's a bad place. It isn't. It's lovely). Maybe one day I'll follow you to Portland!
Sooooo happy for you and him.
Gonna miss you two muchly! But know you are going to rock a new adventure in your lives!
<3
Thanks, Cali! We'll miss you too – but please come see us!!!
Oh so the plans are already in motion to get there? Awesome!
One bit of advice is spend a lot of money on oxen, don't worry about wagon axles and such until you need to. Wait, wrong Oregon Trail…
SAME TIME ZONE FTW.
SO EXCITING!!!! So happy for you.
I just read this, and OMG! So exciting and SO happy for you!
Oh, this is great news. I am excited for you.
So exciting!! Congratulations!! I've never been to Portland but I have a feeling I'd love it to bits. YAY!!
My, we've had quite a year, haven't we? Congrats on the move. I definitely feel your pain about embargoing aspects of your life for the blog — I've got some crazyexciting news on my end that I'm itching to reveal….but I need to wait until everything is finalized first. Hopefully you'll be reading about it soon. Good luck in the Pacific NW, Doniree.
