The changes in seasons often mirrors our own life changes – living space, career objectives, new relationships, and personal decisions. There’s something “new” and “fresh start” about the back-to-school season, regardless of how long you’ve been out of school, or whether or not you’re still in it at all.
Blank notebooks, sharpened pencils, new clothes. It’s a new year, in a sense. Like the leaves turn from green to red, the pages of our own stories turn, closing one chapter to begin the next. The leaves are still green here in Colorado, but I can feel the change coming in the evening breezes – it’s cooler and crisper than it was just weeks ago, and that’s a refreshing and delicious feeling. And if this Midwesterner knows anything, it’s how to recognize Autumn as she creeps in around corners before being seen in broad daylight.
Summer Lovin’
When I first moved to Boulder, one of the first things I did was take on some contract work with one of our local tech startups. Lijit Networks provides a sweet search and stats service to bloggers and online publishers, so being a blogger and online publisher who got to work with other bloggers and online publishers, it was an amazing fit. I learned the ropes and worked 20 hours/week from February until May, when I accepted their offer to go full-time. It was exactly the right choice, allowed me to be fully present in the job I was doing, and learn from some of the brightest minds in Boulder. I’d also never experienced any real work environment other than large corporation and ad agency, so experiencing “startup” life in a startup rich city has completely rocked.
However, big changes are around the corner and new opportunities are arising. I’ve made the choice to first of all continue my yoga teacher training here at the Core Power studios in Boulder. CPY offers what they call an “Extensions” program, which is basically an apprenticeship and will provide some one-on-one mentorship, followed by some in-studio teaching opportunities. Hopefully this helps me get over the nerves and jitters I have about getting up in front of a class, and will totally erase “because of fear,” to the excuses I’ve made for not teaching yet.
Yoga, Writing, and New Gigs
Starting mid-October, I’m back in a shorter round of training and by mid-November hope to be actually putting into practice all of the energy I’ve put into studying.
Meanwhile, I’m still writing for the Minneapolis-based media agency and have also accepted a communications position with a non-profit that I am thrilled about. It’s part-time (so a great integration with the contract work I already do), and allows for telecommuting. The group is HQ’ed here in Boulder, and I’ll get to bounce between the offices here (on campus!) as well as go back to the working-from-home option when needed.
No, I’m not taking on more. I’m letting go a little bit, and my last day with Lijit is this Friday, August 20. I’ll mark the transition with a camping trip with friends, and then be an official part of the communications team with a non-profit with a focus on women in technology and the information, research, and mentorship that surrounds that. Exciting, huh?
This fall is going to be a big one.
What changes are you anticipating this Fall season?

Loved reading this Doni!!!! Good luck at the new gig and let me know how extensions goes! I'm also continuing some yogi-ed; prenatal training end of September!!!! After that (I know, MORE???) I'm thinking about hot yoga but we'll see… might be a lot to take on with a new kiddo but I think it would be a great addition! Take care and my fingers are crossed for you!
Congrats on your new gigs! Its always exciting to start something new and fall seems to be a good time for doing that. Can't wait to hear more about them.
Congrats on all of these new changes. Looks like you are moving in a positive direction!
So proud of you, lady. Big things xoxo
Wow, it sounds like you're keeping busy! Congrats on everything, it sounds like you're exactly where you want to be
Awesome, girl!! Way to take risks and know what you want. My goal in life is to fly to Boulder and take one of your classes. I know you'll rock it!
I love fall. I am so happy for you and your new opportunities. This fall I am starting to volunteer with a high school para-church ministry… It's going to be insane and rewarding… but to do it, I am cutting back on my other obligations. So this fall is about focusing my attention on things/people/causes I really love while balancing my own needs.
That's very exciting to hear you're going to be completing your teacher training soon! Just by reading your blog, I can tell you're going to be a really great yoga instructor.
I love autumn as well, and can definitely relate to the notion that with the rapidly approaching change-of-season will come some life changes as well. The changes I'm anticipating pertain to jobs and finally graduating college.
Have fun camping and good luck with all of your changes!
So I can't believe I didn't think about this until now, but my mom is a yoga instructor in her spare time. If you wanted to ask her anything, I could connect you! I think she teaches the Vinyasa methods. Let me know!
Very exciting my love, so proud and excited for your journey- obviously you know where I'm at, because I happen to be scooting into that pretty little spot of yours at Lijit- WHICH I'M STOKED ABOUT. and which you know for me, is a MASSIVE change and an exciting one
Love you.
I'll keep the seat warm for you, my love!
I always get really excited about fall creeping in (although it doesn't seem like it will ever hit LA right now). I love getting ready for new projects and getting re-organized and re-focused.
Good luck on your next adventure!
I'm anticipating SEEING those green leaves in Colorado next week!
I'm also anticipating a couple of little projects I'm hoping to take on, but at the same time I'm apprehensive because I seem to suck at prioritizing things the way they should be. In fact, this very moment I am declaring that whatever I decide to do in September, my number one goal is to nurture my relationship with my husband. I kind of suck at that, actually.
Um, wow. Look at you go! So happy for all of the doors opening for you. xo
Autumn is my very favorite. Hopefully I will launch Little Gray Suitcase next month, that is my #1 goal! <3
Autumn is my favorite season, and I'm glad I'm back on the east coast this year to actually see the leaves change! I just started doing yoga, I hope that it will help me learn patience!
Sounds like good things to looking forward to in the fall! I am looking forward to getting our new house unpacked as it is currently a mess!
Congrats on all the wonderful changes. I can't wait to hear more about both the yoga and the non-profit.
This fall I'm look forward to a huge trip, and then a chance to reconnect with myself and experience living on my own for once.
