It’s been YEARS since I’ve owned a video game console or system of any kind. Like, since the NES days of yore.
Confession: for someone who considers herself geeky and tech savvy enough, there’s one thing that makes me want to pull my hair out or run for the hills: buttons.
If I need more than one remote control to make something (a TV/DVD player/stereo/toy) work, chances are, I won’t touch it. Seriously. I’ve hardly watched TV at all since 2010 started for a number of reasons:
- I didn’t want to pay for cable.
- I found that it’s a good thing I didn’t pay for cable, because I actually never have the time to watch it.
- I’m missing key pieces for my DVD player to work with my TV, like wires and – you guessed it: appropriate remote controls.
- I decided to opt for Netflix, watch the disks on my laptop, and call it a day.
So, when Nintendo and Netflix joined forces, I thought that was cool, but being the button-phobe that I was, didn’t consider getting myself one of those shiny white boxes. Except that Nintendo had more faith in me than I did and decided that for Round 2 of Brand Enthusiasting, they’d sent me a Wii and then sponsor a party in which I could spread the word to my friends about the fact that you could now stream (from the Internet!) a huge portion of Netflix movies directly through your Wii and into your home.
Except it was just as educational for me as it was for them. For instance, I learned -
- That Nintendo’s doin’ it right in terms of making it super easy to set up and install everything we needed to get up and running. Seriously.
- I also learned (and showed my guests!) how to sync the second remote (not as painful as I thought it’d be).
- Then, I learned that my Mii throws a mean bowling ball (I bowl better in Wii than I do IRL, sadly).
- Finally – and perhaps most importantly – I learned how to find Daniel Tosh’s Completely Serious, which is imperative to watch more than once for ulimate lolz.
I love hosting and had a great time with each of my guests – old friends and new – that were able to come hang out, play a few Wii games, and see one of the funniest comedy routines as of late. But, the fun doesn’t stop there!
I have an extra three-month FREE TRIAL from Netflix to give away! You don’t have to have a Wii already to win, just a willingness to test out what I consider the best subscription decision I ever made (note: I bought my own Netflix subscription mid-winter on my own dime, and have LOVED it dearly ever since. I know, I know. #latetotheparty and all but #betterlatethannever).
HOW TO ENTER:

Disclaimer: I’m a Brand Enthusiast in partnership with Nintendo and Brand About Town. They were gracious enough to provide the Wii, the food, and the prizes I’m giving away here. I’m under no obligation to review or recap anything, but let’s be honest – it’s too fun not to

Favorite movie: Elizabethtown Favorite Show: Biggest Loser
Great giveaway
If you don't have New Super Mario Bros. Wii, you're doin' it wrong.
I have the game, but I hate that there isn't a back and forth, round robin approach to playing. It's fun to play together SOMEtimes, but other times, it gets annoying, IMO.
new super mario bros wii and the lego games have been quite entertaining if you haven't tried 'em yet. :p
current fave show: modern family
already a twitter follower, of course.
i have a wii and a netflix account. why haven't i thought of combining the two?! is that more or less the same as using the netflix account on a PC attached to the television?
Um, so fun! Favorite show? Hm…can I be all cliche and say Sex and the City? Is that okay? Okay. Sex and the City.
Wii game suggestion: World of Goo. So good. I'm serious. Not a button mashing game, either, especially since it involves mostly just one button.
ONE? I'll have to look into this!
Mariokart wii is a must own. Mario Party is surprisingly fun if you like to host and have friends over to play.
I follow you on twitter!
I have to say my favorite Wii game is the new Super Mario Bros, but Zelda is always a classic.
True Real Life Conversation in the Powers Household:
Joe: "Guess what game they're remaking for Wii?"
Renee: "What?"
Joe: "It's one of your favorites…"
Renee: "GOLDENEYE?!"
Even though it's not even out yet, I'm going to go on the books saying Goldeneye for Wii is my favorite game. It kicks so much ass on the 64.
This is awesome! Off the top of my head, one of my fave movies is Empire Records (It's Rex Manning Day!!). Have you ever seen it? Such a guilty pleasure if not! Classically catchy soundtrack, too
