{If you’re viewing this in an RSS reader, click through! I’ve continued my Photoshop education, and with Boyfriend’s help, have designed what I think is my coolest thing yet – new header!}
What a whirlwind these last couple of weeks have been! Boyfriend and I spent the 4th of July weekend in San Diego, CA, and then immediately following that, I spent three days in Traverse City, Michigan. You can read about my cherry festival fun here and here, and here are some photos and notes from the California trip!
Life List Item #48
The first thing of note, and my favorite part of the trip, was the time we spent on the beach. We walked along the beach on the west side of Coronado Island (I’d like to live there sometime, please), and I got to cross a super fun item off my life list.
{Official video of me crossing #48 off my Life List}
This Item #48 was on my Life List because while I’ve been to California before, I’d never actually made it TO the ocean. I finally did, and absolutely loved seeing that part of California for the first time!
City Girl, Community Girl
So, we were in San Diego because Boyfriend has family out there, and they have an annual 4th of July party/reunion sort of thing, so we went out there for that. I got to meet and hang with his cousins, see beaches, eat fresh seafood, add another MLB stadium to the ones I’ve been to (Life List tem #72), and ogle cute and funny-looking animals at the San Diego Zoo.
Now, I don’t know if smaller-town Boulder is doing this to me or what, but while the Big City Girl in me LOVED the pretty skylines and busy bustle, another part of me really appreciated being able to explore smaller neighborhoods. Places like the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Island, and Ocean Beach… They had such a cohesive and complete feel to them in and of themselves, and I loved exploring those little pockets just as much as I loved jetting across the city. The Gaslamp Quarter was so awesome – so many great little restaurants, martini bars, sports bars, cafes, and shops. Shops! I’m not much of a shopper, but I did manage to score a new swimsuit in the neighborhood Quicksilver and two new hats at what we clearly determined was the Best Hat Shop in the World. No, really.
San Diego Zoo
We spent a solid 3+ hours at the San Diego Zoo, and from what I’m told it’s the “best” zoo in the country, though as you’ll see here – I don’t let Boyfriend really get a word in edgewise to explain why. This video is of us (me) on the skyride (“Skyfari”) moving from one end of the zoo to the other. I’m afraid of heights which makes this whole video really awkward and full of nervous laughter…
All of the animals were adorable (well, except some of the ugly ones). Boyfriend was most interested in the Secretary Bird (no, it does not take messages), and I loved the flamingos because I thought it looked like they were doing yoga (modified tree pose?). The zoo itself was pretty huge and I don’t think we quite covered everything. Guess we’ll have to go back!
Foodie Fun
All in all, San Diego was amazing. I love that Boyfriend shares my love for good food and dining experiences, because we manage to run the gamut from cute little hole-in-the-wall Mexican places in Ocean Beach (with AMAZING fish tacos!) to really phenomenal Bay-View rooftop patio restaurants like Top of the Market where I get to try fresh Swordfish for the first time and we were met by the friendliest service in the history of service.
Travel Lessons
We’re learning more and more each trip about how to make this travel habit as seamless as possible – which isn’t too tough considering how laid back we both are in general. Even so, there are obviously some things you learn along the way. Things like how/what to pack, how to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on-the-go, and how to roll with ideas that don’t always go according to plan.
One thing I have learned is that we’re a dynamite team in general, and even more so when it comes to jet-setting and exploring. And I like that.

San Diego is one of my FAVOURITEST! PLACES! EVER!
And not just because they have deep-fried, potato-stuffed rolled tacos.
Or because of Tia. Or because of Kelly Clarkson.
I think, like you said, the most important thing during traveling is learning to roll with the punches. Not everything goes according to plan.
When Billy and I went on our honeymoon, I was nervous because it was our first extended trip involving air travel together. I didn’t know if we were going to run into a snag and end up bickering. BUT. I was joyfully surprised to discover that we make a great time when we travel together. We had such an amazing time in Cozumel and it was lovely to unplug from the world back home and just be together, laughing and learning new things about each other. Obviously that week will always make me look back fondly.
Hopefully your honeymoon is just the first of many trips together
we went to san diego in february and i absolutely fell in love with it!
I bet it was a nice change from Michigan’s winter in February! I hear the weather in SD is the same all year round – how perfect is that?
I’ve only been to San Diego once and it was only for a few days before I went on a cruise but I LOVED it! We went to the zoo too and ended up spending New Year’s Eve there. Definitely would love to go back someday.
Oh, I bet that was a fun place to spend NYE (my favorite holiday… well, except all of the ones that mean long weekends in the summer…).
SD is one of my favorite cities ever and I’m so glad you had an amazing time! You look so HAPPY and beautiful and I’m thrilled for you! Loves!
Thanks! Happy is an understatement
LOVE.
Headed to California for the first time ever on Sunday and this just makes me that much more excited!!
Best travel advice I have ever received: Always travel carry on. If it doesn’t fit in your carry on you don’t need it. (Obviously there are major exceptions to this but in terms of jet-setting and weekend getaways I pretty much live by it!)
What part?! You’ll have a blast – I really want to get to San Fran and the northern part of CA next. Also – great travel advice! I learned to pack light and carry-on when possible because I grew up flying standby (airline brat) and not always knowing if we’d get on a flight!
I LOVE San Diego – one of the coolest places ever!
AMAZING.
love the new header.
i’ve been to san diego, but it was a LONG time ago. i think it might be time for a revisit.
Thank you! I’m going to work on one for my food blog next
I love the San Diego Zoo! I have only been once though, ah well.
My tip is that you never need as much stuff as you think you do, really really. Also always have a water bottle, $20, band-aids, and aspirin. All thinks to nip common problems in the bud so they don’t slow you down.
WATER BOTTLE. Awesome tip, just remember to empty it before you go through security. Also – wet wipes. Seriously, carrying those around was one of my best decisions.
Ohhhh you are SO adorable. I’m glad you had fun in SoCal! I haven’t been to SD in ages but I want to. As you now know, there’s so much to do there.
ps; ZOMG swordfish and prawn skewers?! I die.
OMG they were so good! But so was the bok choy and rice – the whole thing was amazing – highly recommend that restaurant if you find yourself back in SD
Why didn’t you tell me you were in SD?? I could have totally met up with you! Even though SD is over an hour from me… but I would’ve made the drive to see your lovely face. :]
I’m happy to see you had a great time, though.
NEXT TIME! I didn’t realize you were so close! We’ll be back, so we’ll have to plan something then
Awe, you’re too cute. I’ve never been to the West Coast at all
And I’m really scared of heights too. I can’t even ride the ferris wheel.
PS what’s your tattoo of?
I haven’t been on a ferris wheel for awhile, and I think I’d be ok with that. THINK. This whole hanging-from-a-cable thing though… scary! (But totally worth it). Tattoo is in Sanskrit and is of the chorus line to the Beatles’ song “Across the Universe” – “jai guru deva om” From my understanding, it loosely translates to “praises to the heavenly teachers,” though Guru Dev was a real person who was influential in the spread of transcendental meditation…
Love the new header! NIce job.
Thanks! She can be taught
oh yay, glad you had such a great trip. i love san diego, it’s such a fun place. and yum to that food and your videos are so darn cute, you’re cute, also come to NY, miss you!
Thanks! I’m trying to come to NY – might end up flying standby on Pops’ flight benefits, so we’ll see
Also, thanks for the video notes – I’m starting to love posting them
My last trip was GREAT–we had our pups and were heading home to the land of tacos. It sounds like San Diego was amazing. I’ve never been, but would love to go one of these days!
PS I hope to see you in New York!!
Working on it!
Love your experience @ the zoo! My sister is also afraid of heights and still to this day refers to that sky ride as the “death cages” – which she refused to ride
I knew I saw a kindred spirit in Megan…
love this darlin- your pictures, the experience, the video. you’re amazing.
love YOU.
I have wanted to go to San Diego for-ever! It’s probably on the top of my to-go-to list at the moment.
I’ve always wanted to visit Cali! Florida was always closer so we always went there for sunny vacations growing up. I want to go see the really big trees… redwoods I think.
And p.s., you are adorable!
Okay, first of all? That header is like huge thumbs up totally YOU. Also, you look happier in that first picture than I’ve ever seen you. Thirdly, dlfkgjdlgkj this made me miss you so much. Part 4: SEE YOU NEXT WEEK YAY
WAIT there’s a Mexican food place in Ocean Beach with my name on it!? This makes two mexican restaurants with my name, spelled correctly no less (The other one is in Tucson AZ).
Maybe I need to open a restaurant? You know, to keep with the theme.
I TOTALLY thought of you while we were there. You should definitely open a restaurant
That food looks amazing! And swordfish is one of my favorites but I can’t have it while pregnant! Boo! Glad you had such a great trip!
I love San Diego! I last traveled to Mexico for a friend’s destination wedding. I only packed a carry-on. I learned that you never need everything you bring, hopefully on my next trip I will have the ability to pack light.
I love all the traveling you do!! It’s so inspiring and wonderful. I went to California a lot last year and got to dip my feet in the ocean at night and it is pretty fabulous! You look adorable and glad things are going so well!! I’m pretty much drooling at the food, especially the swordfish!!
oh dude. doni. i love love LOVE San Diego. We went in 2008 and had the most amazing time. the sushi, the ocean, the sunshine, the FREAKING EVERYTHING. I just want to kiss it on its big fat California face. Love.
so glad you got to experience – can’t wait to go back.
You take the most gorgeous photos. What type of camera are you using?
Looks like it was a gorgeous and tasty trip!!
