PCK. Sly. Randi Jo. Other nicknames that she’d KILL me for posting publicly (Meesh, you know what I’m talking about…).
She’s my sister, and despite the fact that she’s almost 26 and less than a year younger than I am, she’s still my little sister. Older siblings, you know exactly what I mean.
I said around New Year’s that I wanted to better introduce some of the most important people in my life, and I’m starting today – with Miranda.
For starters, she’s the best damn first-grade teacher in Minnesota, instructing and influencing hundreds of young minds to be smart, independent-thinkers, and to take responsibility for their actions and their outcomes. She starts every class by reminding her students,
Today is going to be the best day ever! WHY?
And every morning, they respond:
Because it’s all about attitude.
It’s all about attitude. What a powerful message for a 6 year-old. For anyone!
She has a huge heart – after all, she has room in there for her students, her family, her husband (Hi, Jeff!), her friends, and the world. She’s creative and inspiring, and more often than not, she is MY role model.
The basics:
Name: Miranda
Age: 25 (26 in April!)
Occupation: first-grade teacher
Relationship status: Married to the best brother-in-law I could’ve ever imagined
Favorite food: pizza
Favorite drink: mango MIRtini
Favorite song: Brown-Eyed Girl (She still believes it was written for her)
She’s a loyal friend, an amazing sister, and just a beautiful person – inside and out.
We played a lot of phone tag for my first month out here in Colorado – the hour time difference isn’t that big, but when you’re a teacher on a school schedule trying to get a hold of a freelancer on a coffee-shop-hours schedule – we just never quite seemed to be in the same place at the same time. We FINALLY caught up this week and I got to hear all about the house she and Jeff are looking to build (BUILD?! OMG!), hear about her students, the snowy weather Minnesota has had, and I got to tell her all about the new and amazing people I’m meeting here, how busy all of my activities, jobs, and freelancing opportunities are keeping me, and just how FREAKING GORGEOUS this place is.
It was finally catching up with Miranda that made me realize – it’s been a crazy first month out here. So crazy and so full and so wildly amazing, but SO hectic that I’ve put so much of my energy in settling in, making friends, and finding a groove that I’ve been missing some key conversations and moments with the people I left in Minnesota. Reconnecting with Miranda, even though it’d only been a few weeks, felt like home.
It Starts with Family and Friends – It Starts with Us
With this in mind, I wrote my first mission for ItStartsWith.Us. As I’ve mentioned, 20-Something Bloggers has joined forces with Nate and the #ATeam in doing little things in our every day lives that make big impacts. A smile, a hello, a note. This week? A reminder to take a step back from the hectic and the busy, and to reach out and reconnect with someone you may have lost touch with – or just need to catch up with. For me, that was making sure Miranda and I had some serious chat time this week. It was sending letters to my bests back in Minnesota. It’s my plans to ignore “business” emails tomorrow and respond to friends and family who’ve reached out.
For you? Maybe it’s sending a card just to let someone know you’re thinking of them. Maybe it’s finally calling back that friend who’s been trying to get a hold of you all week. Or maybe it’s as simple as an IM or an email or a text message – just to say hi.
Whatever it is, do it. Do it today, and share it with us! Check out the website, join the team, and get involved and inspired!
Speaking of 20sb/ISWU missions – if YOU, my 20sb friends, have an idea about how we can make a BIG impact in every day ways that you want to share, let me know and we’ll bring that to the team together: doniree@20sb.net.

My little sister is moving to LA in a couple of weeks. I’m so sad
Awww, you’ll have to go visit her. And stop in Colorado.
This is a great idea! I’ve got several friends I need to reconnect with. It seems life gets in the way and then you forget or put it off and never get around to it. Thanks for inspiring me to finally just do it!
Awesome! I’m glad this resonated
You have such a great, great connections with your high school or college friends from the stories I’ve heard and reunions you have – so awesome
Hello there! I’ve tried sending you a few emails to doni@doniree.com but it keeps bouncing back. You won my give-away on Milk, and I need to get your address
Can you send me a quick email when you get a chance? ms dahl (at) g mail (dot) com
Totally neurotic to leave you a comment about this, I know. I just didn’t want you to miss out on cute new shoes
Thanks doll!
Done and done!
I especially love that high school graduation one
I would say that Miranda is lucky to have you as a sister, but I think it goes both ways. It must be so nice to have each other around.
It is
She’s a doll, and one of my best, best friends. We’re kind of an unstoppable duo.
As I have told you, since I am sitting across from you right now, I love this mission and this post. Something we all need to keep in mind as the days go by, no matter if we’ve moved or not–we have to remember to tend to the relationships we have while cultivating the new ones. It’s hard with how busy we all are but it’s a great thing to remember and thanks for reminding me that I need to do that too!
Your sister sounds adorable–she must come hang out with us in CO soon!
As the father of those cute little girls & now beautiful grown ladies, my heart swells and my grin widens. MJ, Jeff & the Buddster will be staying over tonight.
Awwwww. how sweet you and Mir are…..the most photogenic children ever born. We, your family, all miss you.!
Awww. this totally makes me miss my sister!
We’re 9 hours time difference apart, so imagine how hard it is for us to reach each other!
(She’s an elementary school teacher, too
).
Beautiful post… and now I am going to check out ItStartsWith.Us
Love this. Your sister is adorable…just like you.
The way you’ve connected an intro to Miranda to the #ATeam mission is gorgeous. Aaaaand I’m really pretty excited about this mission!
that picture of you two on graduation? totally choked me up a bit. I wish I had that kind of bond with my own sis.
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have a sister.
Funny that you posted about the It Starts with Us mission; I got the email yesterday and this whole week? I had been calling old friends, reaching out, sending cards, chatting on the phone and making plans for happy hours and dinners next week. It feels so good to talk to them again, some of us separated by states, others by schedules and others yet by lifestyle (marrieds, parents, etc). I’m so glad that I finally got in touch with them; phone tag is definitely not on my “friend” list.
I love this mission idea, so amazing.
This week I went out with one of my oldest friends who I haven’t seen in about a year, and we just killed ourselves laughing all lunch. I love that pick up right where you left off feeling. So much. <3
Hey Doniree-
I read about your #awesomesauce post of Syd’s blog and am so glad I clicked through to read some of your posts. I can totally related to the younger sister comment — although mine are 15 years younger, and no matter how old they get, they will always be my ‘baby’ sisters.
Also, thank you for re-introducing me to Nate’s mission. I follow him on Twitter and have checked out his blog multiple times, but sometimes we all need a reminder to add those little things into our daily lives! Such a great mission!
You definitely have a new fan and reader out of me and I look forward to getting to know you more!
Jill
i ‘joined’ it starts with us but am kind of ashamed to say i haven’t done much with it. this sounds like a great first mission to get involved with..
Loved your mission last week, and love ItStartsWith.Us
I’ll be guest posting on Tuesday!
Awww! Love this! I had a friend in grade school who liked the same boy as me, and she’d always joke that he wrote “Brown Eyed Girl” for her and then I’d be all “Well, he wrote Green Eyed Lady for ME! So there!”
P.S. I could just KISS you for taking Disqus off.
In fact, I think I will.
SMOOCH!!!
You’re welcome! I don’t miss it at ALL.
You are amazing. Plain and simple. I just joined the group and I am so excited. This is wonderful!!!!!
i joined that group about two weeks ago because of you and it makes me happy every time i get an email just knowing i can help make someone’s day a little bit brighter.
also, you are your sister? so dang cute! love those sisterly pictures
Hi, just found your blog through another one that I read. You’re awesome! I’m part of It Starts With Us Too and I thought that was a great mission! It came at a perfect time too. I moved to RI from Maine about a year and a half ago, and ended up going up there to visit that weekend. I got to grab coffee with a friend I hadn’t talked to since November. It was great getting caught up!
