Often the best part of traveling for me is the food. This is no surprise, I’ve been blogging about food and restaurants since I started blogging. When Ashley asked what kind of stuff I wanted to do/see while I was in NYC last weekend, my immediate response was “eat and watch people, not necessarily in that order.”
And we managed BOTH.
I spent about 36 hours in the Big Apple last weekend and managed to accomplish the following:
I saw:
- fanny packs on tourists (WHAT?)
- GREAT neighborhoods including Chelsea, Brooklyn, the Financial District, Murray Hill, and a lot of Midtown
- Ground Zero (which kind of astounded me, how giant that space is)
- The Statue of Liberty (from both the Brooklyn Bridge and from Battery Park City)
- Central Park (well, the southwest corner of it anyway)
Me, in Central Park! (photo: Rachel Gallagher Photography)
I ate:
- a bagel in Brooklyn
- popcorn shrimp at the Heartland Brewery at the South Street Seaport
- CHEESE PLATE (nom)
- TIRAMISU (Bar Baresco)
- chocolate chip pancakes in bed
Room service! (photo: iPhone)
I conquered:
- the Brooklyn Bridge
- crazy crowds in Times Square
- the subways (ok, I really didn’t; Ashley helped me navigate all of them, but I still took them!)
- meeting new people!
- or rather, did NOT conquer: taking pictures. My camera battery died on Friday night shortly after arriving and I didn’t bring the charger. Thank goodness Ashley and Rachel have pictures, and I’ll post some good ones later.
The one thing we didn’t get to that I wanted to try was New York style pizza, but I guess I’ll just have to do that next time, right?

It sounds like you had an awesome time! I heart New York. And I definitely recommend returning for a slice of pizza or two. Maybe next time I'll be there too!
You look amazing in that photo! Sounds like an awesome time in NYC. I haven't been there since 2002, but when I went by Ground Zero I was floored. New York Bagels = nothing like 'em. You must check out Little Italy next time you are there! And the Staten Island Ferry!!!
Food is one of my top priorities when I travel, too. Those chocolate chip pancakes look amazing. Next time you go to New York, head to Clinton Street Baking Company in the Lower East Side for blueberry pancakes. I dream of those constantly.
Glad you were able to see Central Park before you left!! But you know, Philly has Fairmount Park, which is EVEN BIGGER than Central Park!!! I'm jus' sayin'….
Sounds amazing!
oh she will be out this way soon.
we can drag her all over south jersey and philly! weeeee!!
DUDE. I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT CLINTON STREET BAKERY! Their blueberry pancakes WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. they serve them with this warm melted maple butter sauce that will kill you. We must go back IMMEDIATELY. Also, you SO had pizza in NYC. It wasn't greasy traditional NYC pizza, but it was still pizza. Next time you come i'll take you for a $5 slice at DiFara.
It's good times.
oh, and i love that you credited me Rachel Gallagher Photography.
Blueberry pancakes are MY FAVORITE. Well, I might have changed that to choc chip pancakes after this weekend, but I LOVE them. I'll definitely keep that in mind. THANKS
The margherita pizza doesn't count, love
Sounds like you're channeling Bourdain.
Chocolate chip pancakes in bed! Yummm.
That would be AWESOME. Just don't show up in NYC when I show up in Austin
Ok, must go back NOW. This comment makes me hungry.
Oh just you wait.
Officially my new favorite kind of pancakes.
I haven't been to New York since I was about 11 years old. I'm dying to go back. My boyfriend's sister lives in Brooklyn so we're hoping to get out there either this fall or spring. Sounds like you had a great trip!
That is a GREAT picture of you! Gorgeous! Also, my parents tried to get me to wear an old fanny pack of theirs while vacationing in Europe b/c they thought I was for sure going to get robbed and the fanny pack would be better. I turned them down. Several times (they wouldn't let it die). I am glad to hear that my parents are not the only ones b/c they would totally be doing that in NYC.
Mmmm… pizza…
Brooklyn was probably one of my FAVORITE parts
Thanks for the comment!

Food is always important anywhere I go. I'm wicked picky, and I LOVE good food. I don't really blog about food, but I think about it all the time.It was really nice to meet you!

Ah! That sounds like such an amazing time, and I definitely want to go visit NYC again now. Or just travel with you since you're such a pro!
