The Intersection of Then and Now

by doniree on August 12, 2009

It’s a strange, but awesome feeling.  Being in my new favorite restaurant, this place that pretty much wholly encompasses everything about my life now – urban, artsy area, wannabe swanky but oh-so-neighborhoody, delicious – with my oldest friend.  The guy that has known me since I was 16-year old me.  Since I was pink-streaked hair, feather boa on the back dash of my teal Cavalier.  Liking boys, telling him about them.  Figuring out he was the boy I liked.  Doing that for awhile.  Outgrowing each other.  Staying friends – real friends, close friends.

He’s always been that feeling of home for me.  Having that oldest friend feeling in my new and present world… it’s just… comfort.

Catching up – work, men, women, family, love, wine, travel, laughing so hard my cheeks hurt.  Making fun of the server who was 32 shades of creepy.  Indulging in dessert.

Being awesome.

I’ve been all over the map – LITERALLY – this summer.  Meeting new people, seeing new places, exploring.  Tonight, it was SO nice to stop.  To get drinks at a place four blocks from home with someone who’s kept me somewhat grounded for the last 10 years.

I needed that.  I needed to reconnect with home, with me.

And Cafe Maude was pretty much the perfect place to do so.

I'm having dinner tonight with one of my long time friends. It's always a reminder of where you came from. Also, they always a hold a bit of your immaturity in them, and aren't afraid to bring it out to make you laugh. There's nothing better than the feeling of going home, especially before heading out again.

Tomorrow! <3

Reconnecting with old friends is always great, especially the kind of friend who has known you through all different stages of your life.

Sounds like a wonderful time. After running around so much, I know it was so nice for you to just relax & take it easy.

We've been needing to slow things down a bit too. I'm so glad we aren't going anywhere this weekend. Finally a weekend at home. The place has become a pig sty! :)

We need to get together at Cafe Maude. And soon. :)

OH! I love that idea! What about… crap. I think I've got stuff going on
through next weekend. Let's do something after the 24th? At Maude. I'll be
having serious withdrawals by then.

Glad to hear y'all connected and got to have a nice visit.
What is Maude's specialty? Anything on the menu I would like?

Reply

doniree August 13, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Specialty? Hmm, don't think there's one in particular though they always
say their fries are a hot item. (And they're great).
My fave thing is how easy everything is to share. The menu's almost built
that way – apps, sides, etc. CHEESE PLATE.

And there's a white wine – a verdejo – I REALLY like. I think it's my new
fave white.

Rest assured I am still the same girl, Matt :) A little taller, little
cooler… but just as likely to totally girl out when needed :)

I love that it's called Cafe Maude. Makes me wish there's a photo of Bea Arthur around.
