blueberry waffles, trustafarians, and the royal arches

“I have to warn you, I wake up wanting pancakes.”

Pancakes Pictures, Images and Photos

This was my reply to Steve when, while calling it a night on Friday evening he asked what I wanted to do for breakfast the next morning. We’d planned to spend half the day hiking, and were trying to get our day lined up for such an excursion.

So since breakfast – or more specifically – brunch is my favorite meal anywhere and anytime, I DO often wake up wanting pancakes.   Particularly on weekends.  So I warned him.

Sure enough, when 7AM rolled around (which is really 8AM “my time” and what my internal clock was still set to), it’s the second thing I thought of. The first was my confusion at the cold nose and excited tongue licking my face. No, this isn’t how they say “good morning” in Colorado, but rather was Luke, a sweet Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, bidding me good morning. I sat up to scratch his ears and stretched my arms.

Then said:

I want pancakes.

Steve: I have a Belgian waffle maker.

Me: That’ll work.

And with that we got moving, walked to the grocery store and picked up the necessities for not just waffles, but BLUEBERRY waffles. When we got back, we also made coffee (French presses are the coolest inventions EVER and I want one right now), and ate enough breakfast to sustain us up half a mountain.

By 9:30am we were out the door and on our way north to Boulder. I’d never been to Boulder, so Steve explained its unique juxtaposition of hippies and rich people (and thus, rich people’s kids):

Trustafarians, we call the college kids here. No where else will you find such smart, dread-locked, trustfund hippie babies.

Sure enough, the Trustafarians were everywhere – in the Whole Foods, on their bikes, on their longboards. Not surprisingly though, I noticed immediately that Boulder is a very active city and everyone seems to move along in a manner that respects and allows that. Bikers speed down narrow roads alongside cars, and not once did I hear a driver yell, “STUPID BIKERS!” like I’ve heard here in Minneapolis (no, not me. I love me some city bikers and as well-equipped as Minneapolis is FOR bikers, some drivers are still not cool with sharing the road.  Seemingly not so in Boulder. Anyway… /end rant).

Our mission? Royal Arch – the fourth of four flatirons (shown in photo on right). And here we are (left), energetic and excited to hike for hours:

Doesn’t look so tough does it?

Stay tuned.

You're adorable. And what a fun FUN day. Breakfast for champions followed by a road trip followed by a long hike. Though, I always thought longboards were a type of surfboard … and I'm pretty sure there aren't any natural waves in Colorado! Clearly I'm missing something!

Awww, thanks! Longboards (as it was pointed out to me) are like skateboards, only, well… longer :)

My college roommate was from aspen colorado and rode a longboard, he introduced himself to my friends as the big kahuna…nice guy though. That was bozeman mt…the whole rocky mountain range is full of rich hippies driving audis, subarus and range rovers.
