Get Your Hands Dirty!

I want to introduce you to my friend Nicole.

Nicole is an amazing 20-something blogger I’ve come to know and absolutely adore over the last few months. She’s active, energetic, and quirky, and calls or texts me out of the blue to tell me she’s eating cheese on her living room floor and wishing I was there with her.

See why we’re soulmates?

I am also BEYOND THRILLED that she is coming to Minnesota in just 36 DAYS to hang out with Yours Truly and cross a few things off of her life list (canoeing, wine-tasting, and picnics oh my!).

Anyway, everyone say hello to Nicole.

Hello, Nicole!

Now, let me introduce you to HandsIn. Perhaps you’ve already seen me Tweet or Facebook about it, but let me tell you more about this great organization that I think you should check out NOW.  Here’s a little bit of what Nicole says about why she started this and where her inspiration comes from:

There’s a lot being written and discussed right now about Generation Y: what we like, what we want, and how we’re impacting both the job market and the world. As a 20-something, it’s been a struggle trying to figure out how to answer those questions about myself, yet alone my entire generation.

What I’ve figured out so far is this: who I am and what I do cannot be defined without looking at how I impact the world. Working for a paycheck isn’t enough; I want to work for change, making steps toward a better life not just for myself, but for everyone else as well.

I’m tired of the 20-something stereotype. I’m tired of the assumptions that because we’re young, we don’t care. We do care, maybe more than anyone else I’ve ever met. We know that today’s world is ours to better, that we’ll be the ones inheriting the problems and therefore need to work as hard as we can to find solutions. We know that small actions can have big results, and that each individual voice only gets stronger when it’s joined by another voice, and another voice, and that it doesn’t take too many voices to sound a deafening call to action.

It’s in this spirit that I’ve created HandsIn, an organization to inspire 20-somethings to change their world through dedicated community service and a shared commitment to a sustainable lifestyle.

HandsIn, which is part social network, part online magazine, and part volunteer coordination service is my voice, my call, my small action, and my hope is that you’ll join me in creating a new image of 20-somethings who are passionate about changing their world.

As an incentive (as if we need it!), they’re giving away prizes for getting active on the site. The prize for this big launch is $200 – $100 will go to the winner in the form of a gift card to the retailer of their choice; the other $100 will go directly to your chosen charity.  Here’s how to enter:

Everything you do on the site between now and midnight (PST) on Friday, March 27 earns you one entry- so comment on a post, set up a profile, make a pledge for 20 Something Service Day, nominate someone special, submit content, follow us on Twitter, tweet about our organization, join our Facebook group- every single action counts as its own entry.

So what are you waiting for?  Go change your world already!
