Thanks to Emily (and everyone else locally that re-tweeted and/or re-blogged it), every-Twincian*-and-their-mother I hit up Punch Pizza this week for their free margherita pizza (or $5.95 off any other pizza!).
I went with two of my three roomies to the one in Uptown/Calhoun at the Lake/Excelsior split on the North end of Lake Calhoun. The parking lot was full, and the line backed up from the counter to the door. We grabbed menus and moved along pretty quickly, making our way up to the girl at the counter. She pleasantly took my order, moved me along to the restaurant where I was met by a friendly guy keeping order by seating people as they came in rather than allowing the free-for-all that would’ve inevitably happened had we been allowed to choose our own seating.
I overheard a customer asking said Friendly Man if the place had been as crazy as it was tonight all week, because of the Free Pizza coupon going around. He replied that it was pretty normal/steady on Monday/Tuesday, but that yesterday’s when it really picked up. Considering Emily spread the news from City Pages on Tuesday, and the rest of the blog/Twitter/local social media world followed suit shortly after, it’s no surprise to me that the rush would’ve happened immediately after the coupon “went viral.”
Anyway, for as crazybusy as it was, I was blown away by how smoothly everything ran and by the friendliness of the staff throughout the whole experience. Orders were called with what almost-but-not-quite seemed like exaggerated cheeriness and Friendly Seater Man made pleasant conversation while waiting to sit our party of three at the next open table.
I used the “$5.95 off another pizza” offer to get the Borgata (sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, egg plant, and olives…mmmmm). My cheapass would’ve typically not spent $12 on a pizza I was hoarding enjoying all to myself, so I made sure to savor (and consume) every single bite. It was amazing, maybe because it was half-off, maybe because I picked the olives off (too salty), but most likely because Punch rocks my socks off.

I’m not sure I can take ALL the credit for that one. Punch is so delicious, it sells itself.
But since I’m a big whore, I appreciate the credit.
