I think America is skipping Thanksgiving. Retail America anyway. I mean, I know it’s not exactly the holiday known for raking in all of 4Q’s missing retail dollars, but come on!
Has anyone else noticed this? It seemed like Target’s Christmas stuff went up before the Halloween clearance cleared the shelf, and I remember hearing the first of their ad campaign (“We’ve got Christmas wrapped.”) the day after Halloween.
Even my second-favorite late-night personality (I love you most, Jon Stewart) Stephen Colbert has already started promoting his Christmas special, A Colbert Christmas:
The exception is the Food Network. They’re programming all kinds of wonderfully delicious Thanksgiving shows, and I love them for it!
Ads are already Christmas-focused, red/white/green fills billboards and commercials, and the neighborhood yard-clutterer has already cluttered his yard with his 3 nativity scenes, 5 frosties, 12 elves, and strategically placed Santas.
Where is Thanksgiving???
Family, football, Macy’s Parade, turkey, PUMPKIN PIE (omg, pumpkin pie!), dressing, green beans, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, apple crisp, dessert wines, and naps!
I intend to fully focus on Thanksgiving Day until it has come and gone. I will anticipate it, I will plan for it, I will savor it. AND then on Friday, I will turn my attention to the next holiday as the family revisits our tradition of tree-decorating the day after Thanksgiving.
Until then though, it’s all turkey all the time here.
